Definition of Surrogacy
Surrogacy is a type of third party assisted reproductive technology (ART) in which an unrelated female carries the baby for a single or couple who cannot conceive naturally. Various medical or biologic reasons including issues with the uterus, which make the duration or pregnancy difficult or impossible, make surrogacy necessary. In conjunction with egg donation, it also allows single men and same-sex male couples to conceive.
Types of Surrogacy
Traditional Surrogacy in Mexico
With traditional surrogacy, the surrogate mother is also the egg donor. The sperm from the intended father is combined with the eggs from the surrogate mother, either through intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in-vitro fertilization (IVF). The surrogate mother therefore also has a biological link to the baby. Due to the additional legal complexity of a genetically related child, we do not offer traditional surrogacy in Mexico.
Gestational Surrogacy in Mexico
As opposed to traditional surrogacy, a surrogate mother with gestational surrogacy has no genetic relationship to the conceived child. She is also called a gestational carrier. With gestational surrogacy in Mexico, embryos may be created through an IVF cycle of the intended mother and intended father. In such a case, the offspring will be 100% genetically related to the heterosexual intended parents.
With single men and gay male partners, an egg donor will undergo an IVF cycle, and the eggs will be combined with the sperm of the biological father to create embryos. With the ensuing baby, there is no genetic link between the offspring and the surrogate mother at all. Gestational surrogacy is the only form of surrogacy we offer in Mexico.
